Tailor to Fit It
This paper is a result of research activities within wearable communications carried out at the Ericsson Norway Applied research center in collaboration with the University of Oslo. The research activities are based on the conviction that the user and usability should be in focus. The research is grounded on a field study conducted to investigate a highly mobile activity, namely bike messenger ...
متن کاملSplines: a perfect fit for medical imaging
Splines, which were invented by Schoenberg more than fifty years ago, constitute an elegant framework for dealing with interpolation and discretization problems. They are widely used in computer-aided design and computer graphics, but have been neglected in medical imaging applications, mostly as a consequence of what one may call the "bad press" phenomenon. Thanks to some recent research effor...
متن کاملTailor-made Tests for Goodness of Fit to Semiparametric Hypotheses
We introduce a new framework for constructing tests of a general semiparametric hypotheses which (i) have non-trivial power on the n−1/2 scale in every direction. (ii) can be tailored to put substantial power on alternatives of importance. The approach is based on combining test statistics based on stochastic processes of score statistics with bootstrap critical values.
متن کاملIntegral feedback generically achieves perfect adaptation in stochastic biochemical networks
Homeostasis is a running theme in biology. Often achieved through feedback regulation strategies, homeostasis allows living cells to control their internal environment as a means for surviving changing and unfavourable environments. While many endogenous homeostatic motifs have been studied in living cells, synthetic homeostatic circuits have received far less attention. The tight regulation of...
متن کاملCompeting ideas: A perfect fit for the evidence
We’ve seen that evaluating an idea in science is not always a matter of one key experiment and a definitive result. Scientists often consider multiple ideas at once and test those ideas in many different ways. This process generates multiple lines of evidence relevant to each idea. For example, two competing ideas about coral atoll formation (island subsidence vs. formation on debris-topped und...
